Oddly Useful was founded in the United Kingdom with a singular objective: to provide direct, mathematically verifiable answers to the specific questions people actually search for, without burying the user under walls of keyword-stuffed fluff, intrusive paywalls, or multi-page click-traps.

The modern web is crowded with generic blogs where finding a simple calculation requires scrolling through 2,000 words of background narrative before reaching an outdated formula. Oddly Useful reverses that experience: the interactive calculator or generator appears immediately above the fold, calculates in real time, and is supported by transparent mathematical methodology and contextual benchmarks below.

Who Built Oddly Useful (Solo Founder & Developer)

Oddly Useful is an independent project created and maintained by Matthew Taylor, a software developer based in the United Kingdom.

Frustrated by bloated utility websites overloaded with intrusive scripts, popups, and paywalls, Matthew built Oddly Useful as a lightweight, lightning-fast digital toolbox. Every tool is engineered to run directly in your browser without tracking personal data or sending calculation inputs to external servers.

Our Calculation & Data Principles

Every tool published on Oddly Useful adheres to four foundational engineering standards:

  1. 100% Client-Side Privacy (Zero Data Logging): Private calculations stay private. All calculation logic runs locally inside your web browser. We never log, store, transmit, or monetize any salaries, personal debts, household figures, dates, or values you enter into our tools.
  2. Authoritative & Primary Data Sourcing: Wherever statutory rates, tax thresholds, or financial formulas are involved, figures are sourced directly from official authorities — including HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), the Bank of England, the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the UK National Health Service (NHS), and ISO measurement standards.
  3. Deterministic Logic & Verification: Calculation engines are deterministically programmed and verified across standard inputs, boundary conditions, and edge cases to ensure reliable mathematical accuracy.
  4. Algorithmic Transparency: Calculations are never treated as black boxes. Every tool includes transparent explanations of the underlying formula, statutory allowances applied, and contextual sensitivities so you understand exactly how the result is produced.

How Oddly Useful Is Funded

Oddly Useful is 100% free for everyone to use. To cover server hosting, domain fees, and continuous development costs, the site is funded through standard display advertising (Google AdSense).
