About Oddly Useful

A site for weirdly specific UK money, tax, and life calculators.

What this site is

Oddly Useful is a free collection of UK-focused calculators and short editorial guides covering money, tax, mortgages, savings, and a few corners of everyday life that don't fit neatly anywhere else. Every tool runs entirely in your browser — nothing you type into a calculator is sent to a server, logged, or shared.

Who writes the content

Editorial content is written and reviewed by the Oddly Useful editorial team. Where a guide covers tax, mortgage, or other regulated areas, the maths and thresholds are cross-checked against the relevant primary source (HMRC, Bank of England, ONS, the relevant council, or the FCA) and the source is linked at the foot of the page or in the methodology page.

We are not a regulated financial adviser and we do not provide personalised financial advice. The site exists to help you understand the maths and the rules so you can make better decisions — or so you can ask better questions of an adviser if you need one.

How we keep things accurate

  • Tax-year refresh: rates and thresholds are reviewed and updated each April.
  • Last-updated dates: every editorial page carries a visible “updated” date.
  • Methodology page: every non-trivial formula is documented in the methodology, with links to the primary source.
  • Corrections policy: errors are corrected within 48 hours of being reported, and the change is dated on the affected page.

How the site is funded

Currently: it isn't — there are no ads, affiliate links, sponsored tools, or paid placements anywhere on the site. If that changes, this section will be updated to disclose exactly what the relationship is and where it appears, before any such content goes live. We will never disguise sponsored content as editorial.

Privacy

The site uses privacy-respecting analytics (page-level only, no cookies, no cross-site tracking, no fingerprinting). Calculator inputs never leave your browser. We don't sell, share, or otherwise pass on any user data because we don't collect any.
